Disconnecting Over Winter Break

You may remember, that last year I took a 5 day break from technology and truly enjoyed being disconnected during the holidays.

Like last year, I haven’t had a day off since then, but I’m less bitchy about it this year.  Probably because I’m sleeping more and I’ve managed to find a bit more balance in my life.  Not much, but a little…

This year, I only have six total days off work.  Part of this is because I teach for three different schools with three different schedules and part of it is because of one of the specific classes I teach.  I am planning to disconnect from both the computer and my phone for five days.  I will not be checking my classes, checking emails, or texting during this time.

Last year, I wrote a post, hit publish, and vanished into oblivion for 5 days.  This wasn’t well received, so this year, I thought I’d give you a bit of warning.  I plan to be offline from noon on Tuesday, December 21 until six pm on Sunday, December 26.  If you need me during this time, you’ll have to call me.  Otherwise, I’ll get back to you when I return to my normal working and connected life.

I will have a few posts scheduled to appear on the blog during that time — mostly photos.

During my winter break I have big plans to make a gingerbread house with my little guy, take lots of photos, play with new toys in my pajamas, bake and cook, spend time with my hubby, clean out the kids closets, find homes for all of the new stuff that will make it’s way into our house, work on the girls’ baby books, and enjoy the season.  I don’t think I’ll be bored without the computer and Blackberry in my life for a few days!!

Do you ever totally disconnect?  Do you want to?

I think this is a great idea and you should try a long weekend sometime too!

    Good for you!

I've gone for a couple of days without checking FB, but that's about it. Thankfully (?) I don't have a smartphone so I can't be online all day.

    Leslie,

A long weekend sounds like a wonderful time to disconnect — however, that's part of my point. Since I teach online, I don't get weekends off. These 5/6 days are literally my only days off all year — I work every other day. Some days I don't work for long, but I still have to check my classes every day.

I totally remember this last year and kudos to you for doing it again this year!! I really should follow your lead and go this route, but I'm just not sure if I can do it. :-) I said I would have Drake's album up to date at his 1 year birthday party at the beginning of Feb and it's not looking so good…this time would really help.

I enjoyed my break I was forced to take for a month. So enjoy some much-needed "you" time.
