Post-Partum Weight Loss

Those of you that know me, knew this post was coming… You just probably didn’t realize it would appear this soon. :)

Losing my baby weight is a big deal to me. I don’t want to be the woman with two 10 month olds is still asked when she is due. I want to feel comfortable in my own skin. I want to be able to wear my old jeans and do so comfortably. These are very lofty goals.
With Bo, I gained a lot of weight during the pregnancy. I weighed in at 187 pounds before I gave birth to Bo. I did manage to lose the weight and managed to reach about 130, while still breastfeeding. However, I jumped back on the infertility roller coaster just one week after I finished breastfeeding and ended up at about 137 at the end of my IVF cycle that conceived the twins.
Last week, I weighed in at 182 pounds before the girls births. Almost 10 of those pounds were gained in the last two weeks of the pregnancy and were obviously water weight. Nearly 14 pounds was the girls themselves, not including the placentas and all that jazz. This morning, exactly one week post-partum, I weighed in at 152 pounds. I’m counting this as my “starting weight” since I have obviously lost a lot of the water weight and can now see my ankles again.
I still have a significant stomach but it does seem to be becoming smaller each day. I was the lucky winner of a Belly Bandit over at Two of a Kind Working on a Full House and I am anxious for it to arrive to see if it helps any with the belly issue. We won’t talk about the skin on the stomach in this post — that’s a whole other issue…
Don’t fret, I don’t plan to start actively trying to lose weight at this point. I will at least wait until after my 6 week checkup. I won 3 months of free Weight Watchers online on another blog right after I found out I was pregnant, so I have been saving those months. Does anyone know if exclusively breastfeeding twins warrants more points than exclusively breastfeeding a singleton? And if so, how many?

Currently, I just can’t imagine counting points. My milk isn’t totally established yet and my hunger is overwhelming. I am struggling to eat and drink enough to keep up with it. I look forward to when my milk is more regulated and I can start to gain a little control over the eating. I also need to work on the mint issue. The mint cravings have not gone away. I am currently eating 4-6 mini peppermint patties a day plus at least 2 rolls of Breathsavers. I think I have an issue and an intervention is going to be needed to break the habit.
Once the twins have a more solid schedule, I hope to be able to fit in some time on the treadmill that we purchased just days before I found out I was pregnant. Hopefully I will be motivated to do it by all of the blog reading I can do with my surf shelf. I’ve been trying to keep up with blogs on my phone but I still have over 700 unread posts. Treadmill time will be a great time to keep up with all of you!
Eventually, I’d like to join the local Y (with 2 hours of free childcare per day!! woo!) but the girls have to be at least 6 months old and I know it will be awhile before I will feel comfortable leaving them anyway.
My goal weight is 125 pounds. This is a healthy weight for me and one where I feel comfortable. During my pageant days I weighed about 110, but I honestly don’t feel that was a healthy weight for me. (BTW: Have any of you seen the Beauty Pageant episode of Parks and Recreation? Pretty funny stuff…) If I weigh 125 I’ll easily fit into all of my clothes and I should be pretty healthy as well. (I’m 5 feet 4 inches).
Why am I posting all of this here? Mostly, to enable all of my blog friends to keep me accountable. Don’t let me become that woman that lets her weight plateau and wears the same ratty sweatpants every day (clean sweatpants are important… :) ). When you see the tweets where I am debating stepping on the treadmill or pondering eating a whole peach pie, support would be appreciated. :)
What did you do to lose the post-partum weight? What worked for you? What advice do you have for me and others at this stage of the game?

I've never done Weight Watchers, but each child requires as many additional calories as a singleton, so I suspect that you're on the right track. I ate more while I was nursing twins that I did when I was pregnant with twins, and still lost the weight lightning fast, if that helps at all.

Good luck. (And kudos on nursing. It's not always easy.)

When I was on WW while nursing, I was losing about 3 pounds per week with 10 extra points. I would assume that nursing twins would mean you need more points. You don't want to lose the weight too fast or not have the nutrition you need for the girls.

Don't stress about the weight this early, it will come off. You have already made excellent progress and I am sure by next week all the swelling and extra fluid will be gone.

I'm right there with you! I found that I didn't have the time to track my food on Weight Watchers or anything like it so I chose Jenny Craig this time around. It's expensive but it makes my life a lot less complicated. Thus far I've lost all my pregnancy weight, am about 2 pounds away from losing my IVF weight and then I'm planning on losing those pesky 10 pounds I've been carrying around for awhile to get to 130.

    Good luck!!!

I didn't do WW until almost a year from when I had O – I really didn't want to rock the supply boat when I was nursing. But once O weaned WW was a very good thing for me. And I'll bet you ANYTHING that BFing twins = more points. Don't know how many, though, sorry.

I agree with the others that I wouldn't focus too much this early on losing the weight. Right now, you need to focus on the TYPE of food you eat. Yeah, okay, you have a mint issue. But if you're having lots of veggies and protein and calcium and making good choices in between your 4-6 peppermint patties, that's okay too.

And getting out for walks will be good too – SOME activity, you know?

Give it a few months, until you all settle into a routine. And then reassess.

I can tell you that the majority of my pregnancy weight from O came off fairly rapidly. I had to do WW to get the final 10lbs, and even now I struggle with the final 5. I'm getting closer to admitting that my "maintaining weight" is a little heavier than my goal, but not quite there yet.

And congratulations again. I finally fixed my feed – wasn't seeing any of your new posts. I'll be back to regularly commenting shortly! :)

So, don't get mad at me, but i was one of the lucky ones whose weight seemed to just melt away. I owe most (all??) of it to breastfeeding and going up and downstairs a million times a day 9we have a 3-story townhouse).

I would say that BFing twins is WAY more calorie burning than a singleton. Its probably double! Each ounce of BM has about 20 calories. Those calories have to come from somewhere. And since you will be producing twice as much, you should "burn" twice as many calories. I pumped and got about 60oz/day at my peak (right before starting the twins on solids) – that's 1200 calories!! or 3 hours on the treadmill. I'll take pumping in front of the TV any day :)

    Goodluck with it!!

I also have a belly bandit and it helped ALOT..I was back in my old jeans one week after my twins were born. Good luck. Melissa

a lot of my tummy went down fast..and now I'm kind of stuck….babies can really mess you up!

The Belly Bandit should be there today if it isn't already-they said its shipped!

Twins have a "whittling" effect. You'll probably end up skinnier than pre-PG. I don't think you should worry about it at this time or try Weight Watchers while BFing twins.

My best tip is to use the stroller as much as possible. I took the girls out in the stroller every day last winter as long as it was over 30 degrees and not windy, and I walked them for 30 to 60 minutes each time. I know this is more difficult with an older child. Also, stay hydrated and remember to EAT.

I am a total stress eater and I have been MASSIVELY stressed for the past year since the twins were born. So, while I did watch what I ate, I did (and still do) indulge once and awhile. Sometimes a muffin or 12 when all 3 are screaming is the only thing that makes you feel better (albeit, temporarily).

I didn't attempt to lose the weight for quite some time because I did not want to screw up my milk supply, because my twins had colic for 6 months (yes, it can last that long) and I didn't want them starving on top of it. But, fortunately, the weight seemed to come off even without me trying too hard.

I am just about back at my pre-pregnancy weight, and honestly, I didn't have to work too hard to do it. I hope it's the same for you.

I did not lose any weight whatsoever breastfeeding twins for a year. I think it's 50/50 on whether or not you will lose more BFing. I gained a lot of weight with doing 3 IVFs in one year, then being pg with twins… I'm just now finding time to go to the gym 2-3 times a week. Life with 3 is time consuming – and somewhere along the way I lost my willpower & motivation :) You will figure out your schedule and reach your goal, no doubt!!

have you tried mint chap stick as a way to give the illusion of having eaten a mint? I am very fond of mint myself and think it helps curb a craving.

If you want to eat the peach pie the best support I can give you is to eat half of it with you because I care. ;)
