Ask Jamie: A Third Child??

Amber asks:
Thanks for sharing and being so open! I do have one question – does your fertility coverage stop once a 2nd child is born? I didn’t really think about that from the perspective of the frozen cycles (if you wanted a 3rd child). Just curious. Good luck!

I have to admit, I didn’t know the answer to this question and I had to do a bit of research to come up with the answer. A third child has never really been in my realm of possibility. Before Bo came along, all I could hope and pray for was one child. And I still feel that way. If we are lucky enough to have a second child it will feel like the icing on the cake.

For numerous reasons, having three children seems outside of my scope. I won’t go into all of my reasons here, but it just really isn’t something we’ve given serious consideration given my infertility. It took 11 transferred embryos and 5 IVF cycles to produce 1 baby. It doesn’t even seem possible that with 2 fresh and unlimited frozen cycles we would even have a chance at 2 more babies!

That said, I did dig out the insurance book and asked a few questions at my doctor’s appointment on Wednesday. Our insurance would cover unlimited frozen cycles after the birth of a second child.

And really, I’m not sure what my thoughts are on that. I am honestly very scared about how I will be able to deal with two children under two if I am pregnant this cycle. The thought of three little ones is overwhelming.

During our last two fresh IVF cycles we did not have any embryos to freeze. But if we did have frozen embryos, I think this is definitely an issue that Mike and I would have to sit down and discuss thoughtfully. If we did decide not to do FETs for a third child we would either donate our embryos to another couple or donate the embryos for stem cell research. Both are options that I have mixed feelings about and would have to put a lot of thought into making that decision.

I hope this answers your question, Amber! :)

That would be a tough decision to make. I am surprised and glad they continue to cover after a second. They should.

My fingers are crossed for you that everything goes well!! Bo is an adorable boy and I think we would be a great big bro!

  3. Rebecca says:

It took me 3 IVFs and an FET to get pregnant with my first child. When she was a year old we started trying for our second. It only took on IVF cycle this time AND I’m pregnant with twins. So, you just never know what is going to happen!

Good luck with your next go at IVF. It took me 3 cycles with my twins, then for our next PG it took one cycle and we got PG with twins again (sadly we lost one early on.)

I had 3 – 2 and under for a while, if it happens you will be fine. We just do what we need to get through the day!

Good luck and take care! (I do recommend a singleton PG though, much easier on the old body! :) )

“The thought of three little ones is overwhelming.” You know, it’s not as overwhelming as one might think!!

I watched 3 under the age of 2 this week, it wasn’t too bad. The older ones learned patience while I met the 4 month olds needs. I think it was good for everyone.

I only read your old blog off and on once you were pregnant with Bo, and then regularly once he was born. My question is, what gave you the strength to keep trying IVF after it failed 4 times?

Good luck with this journey. I wish you all the best.

As for three under two, it’s do-able. ;) I had three kids in 2 years and it wasn’t nearly as bad as I’d thought. They’re 4, 3, and 2 now and it only gets easier. :)
