Vacation

Well, we are planning a vacation. We have no idea what we are going to do but Mike is taking off from next Thursday through the following Wednesday. I’m less concerned about where we are going and more concerned about traveling with Bo. We’ve taken him on all kinds of road trips, but always stayed in people’s homes. This will be our first hotel stay.

I’m looking for tips on how to travel with a 6 month old. What will we need? What should I expect?

I don’t think we will be able to use homemade food — even in a cooler it won’t stay frozen for 7 days. So I guess I’ll have to venture out and buy some organic baby food.

All suggestions, help, tips, and advice would be greatly appreciated.

well, we traveled when K was 4 months- my tip is to just pack the amount of dipes/wipes and milk/formula (unless you exclusively BF) for the trip to your destination – then we bought the supplies when we made it to wherever – that cuts down on need for space. I pretty much only packed her special “must have” toys for the trip and kept a few in the dipe bag for the to and from legs of the trip. Organic food- I used and loved Earth’s Best for all of K’s food, or organic deli meat from the grosh.

Bring your own sheets for a Pack and Play or crib- chances are , most places will give you 1 or the other —–bring extra jammies, and extra clothes for accidents.

As for the actual clothes- I planned out clothing for each day and tried to keep it simple and not “overpack” and then only packed her fave, must have books that were smaller in size and weight – preferable paperback if possible, too! :)

    Yay – what fun!

Be careful with the Gerber Organic food because of their plastic containers. They are made from plastic #7 that is supposed to be the worst for leaching chemicals into the food. I didn’t look at any of the other brands. I make J’s food, but thought I would buy prunes to avoid the mess. I returned them and bought some in a glass jar. ~Lisa

Actually Gerber babyfood containers are BPA free! They are made up of plastic 1 and 6 (PET and PS) — the combination means they have to use the #7(other) recycling code. Google “gerber & bpa”. PS (#6) has it’s own issues, but it is the outer layer of the containers, so it does not touch food. As always, everyone should do their own research and feel comfortable with their own decisions.

As far as the vacation, I’m sure that Bo will do so much better than you expect him too. M did really well on our trip to NYC at the same age Bo is now. I loved having the sling for napping on the go, we also used the Bjorn and stroller. Take your crib sheets, you’ll know they are clean and the smell will be comforting. Practice lowering the crib rail if you get a crib. You don’t want to find out it creaks, or is difficult to operate with a tired baby. Plan “must do” and “like to do” items. Do all the “must do” items first, and you won’t be as dissapointed if Bo isn’t in the mood to handle everything. Last but not least, relax! It will not be as bad as you are expecting –we did everything on the “must do” list on day 1. Email me if you want more info…

We just spent the night with Maggie in a hotel this past weekend. We decided to pay extra for a suite (addtl $60), and I’m so glad that we did. It was nice to be able to put her down for naps and for bed and still be able to hang out in the other room. Saturday night after she went to bed, my husband picked up takeout from a great restaurant and we watched a movie, all while Maggie slept in the bedroom. Granted, our stay was one night and you’re planning a longer getaway, but it’s something to consider.

Also, our room had a mini-fridge where we stored her food, so that’s an option to consider, once you’ve decided where you’re going.

    Have fun!
